Research Project Description
This IRL team used a mixed methods approach to assess the best strategies for and the health impact of affordable housing programs and case management for people living with HIV/AIDS in West Alabama. To investigate the health impact, the team partnered with Maude Whatley Health Services and Five Horizons Health Services (formerly West Alabama AIDS Outreach) and conducted a comparative effectiveness research study. This research project also included a program evaluation of a statewide community and policy advocacy program for people living with HIV/AIDS in Alabama. The team also examined relevant state policies and interviewed elected officials and people living with HIV/AIDS in Alabama.

Billy Kirkpatrick, PhD
Billy Kirkpatrick is the Executive Director of Five Horizons Health Services. He has a passion for advancing health equity among individuals facing poverty and living with HIV/AIDS. He has experience serving as a case manager for people living with HIV/AIDs and teaching graduate courses in nonprofit administration. Dr. Kirkpatrick mentioned that he would like to improve his research skills to bring much needed empirical research
Safiya George, PhD
Safiya George is an Associate Professor at the Capstone College of Nursing and the Assistant Dean for Research at the University of Alabama. Her research focuses on the impact of psychosocial factors on HIV health outcomes in people living with HIV/AIDS and the role of cognitive and cultural factors in HIV risk among adolescents.
George Mugoya, PhD
George Mugoya is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Studies in Psychology, Research Methodology and Counseling at the University of Alabama. His research interests include HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, family/dating violence, and quality of life for individuals with disabilities.
