Curriculum Training Modules ››› Power, Voice, and Decision-Making

This module explores how power, voice, and decision-making shape Community-Engaged Research. Participants will examine approaches for shifting power toward communities, centering lived experience and community-defined priorities, and building more equitable collaborations. The module emphasizes shared leadership, intentional negotiation of power, and meaningful community participation in shaping research from vision through decision-making.
Topics
Designing from the Edges
Designing from the edges means moving marginalized communities from the periphery to the center.
Equitable Collaboration
Intentionally naming and acknowledging power imbalances then agreeing on ways to actively redress them.
Community-Defined Research Questions
Research questions must be defined by the community based on their lived experience, not by academic (or other) funding agendas.
Centering Community Voice
Community Engaged Research requires outsiders to listen deeply to what matters to the community without imposing external assumptions.
Negotiating Power
Key to equitable collaboration, negotiating power requires groups to identify power imbalances and commit to engaging in ways that center the voices and needs of those most affected.
Shared Leadership
The decentralization and sharing of power (information, decision-making, labor, etc.) across a team.
