Research Project Description
Our research project is called, "Not One More: Violence at the Intersection of Structural Racism and Transphobia & the Imperative to Value the Lives of Trans Women of Color." This project brings together an interdisciplinary team spanning sociology and technology, public health, and grassroots advocacy and mobilization to end the violence against trans women of color. Our purpose is to investigate the social etiology, root causes, and underlying mechanisms of intersectional violence—the product of systemic racism and transphobia—that trans women of color face. Secondarily, we will evaluate how access to housing impacts experiences of violence, structural racism, community health and well-being for this community. We will use mobile health technology to measure, characterize, and visualize the magnitude and types of intersectional violence that trans women of color face in San Francisco.
Phase 1 will be focused on examining the incidence, prevalence, and types of intersectional violence that trans women face in San Francisco. We will use a mobile app to deploy ecological momentary assessments (EMA) - brief random mobile phone surveys. Participants will be able to report daily experiences of intersectional violence, what led up to the event, whether they attribute the event to a particular intersectional identity (racism, transphobia, misogyny, a combination of interlocking oppressions), GPS metadata, and its impact on their health and well-being.
In Phase 2, we will rapidly analyze these data to map the geographic cartography of intersectional violence and structural racism, its social antecedents, environments in real-time, and identify opportunities for policy interventions.
In Phase 3, we will create a culture of health impact tool to disrupt the status quo, an open-source reporting website to ensure sustainability and be scaled up to include other communities.
Team Members
Akira T. Jackson
Director Akira Jackson, began her work with the Transgender Advocates for Justice and Accountability Coalition in August 2016. Also, Director Jackson has been a researcher at the University of California San Francisco under the Center for AIDS Prevention Sciences for 6 years. Ms. Jackson has experience in program development, coalition building, community mobilization, social justice leadership, community-based health research, database design and management, public speaking, and fundraising.
Erin Wilson
Erin Wilson (she/her) is a Senior Research Scientist at the San Francisco Department of Public Health and leads a portfolio of research and interventions at our Trans Research Unit for Equity (TRUE). She is focused on research in partnership with community to address the most pressing issues affecting health equity for trans women of color in San Francisco and around the world.
Sean Arayasirikul
Sean Arayasirikul, PhD (they/them), is an Associate Professor at the University of California, Irvine in the Department of Health, Society, and Behavior. As a medical sociologist, they utilize mobile health and digital technologies to examine and disrupt health inequities at the intersection of race, sexual orientation, and minority gender identity. They hope to forge new models of public accountability in a culture of health that values and protects trans women of color.
